From twilight jumping to national championships — everything you need to know about competing with Wanganui Petre Pony Club.
Wanganui Petre competes across all disciplines.
Our biggest club competition — held in Foxton, September/October. Teams of 8 riders across four pony categories (60cm–90cm).
Held at Kihikihi, 19–20 November. Riders must be consistently jumping at the height they wish to enter. Fun but requires travel.
Summer eventing — fabulous fun. Both a team event and individual competition. Qualifications required as set by the organising committee.
The next step up from Bruce Forbes. Held in Tokoroa, 80cm & 95cm. Riders must be going confidently at this level.
Lead rein to senior levels. You ride two tests on the day, in Petre uniform. Rotated between Manawatu, Whanganui, Rangitikei and Horowhenua clubs.
Games: teams of 5 riders, two age categories (10 & under / 10+). Top 5 pairs and teams advance to Zone Games. Show Jumping also held at Area level.
Area competitions are run under the Manawatu West Coast region, drawing riders from Manawatu, Rangitikei, Horowhenua and Whanganui. You ride in green and black at Area level.
2026: Hawkes Bay, Hastings — 19–21 April
Dressage, Cross-Country and Jumping — in that sequence. Four divisions:
Week of 24–29 March. Team of 4 represents Manawatu West Coast at Horse of the Year.
Riders must have attended a minimum number of working rallies in the 12 months preceding any examination date or competition entry closing date.
3 of these must be the same rider & mount combination sitting the exam or entering the competition.

Dispensation of one rally may be granted by the District Commissioner for Club and Area competitions in special circumstances.
